My wife and I are devote Christians and attend church services on a regular basis. Periodically, and as we approach Holy Week leading up to Easter, we are encouraged to engage in or participate in "fasting" for various reasons, purposes or causes.
In my twisted and sardonic sense of humor, I thought to myself the following. Coming to Indonesia was, and remains, the greatest "fasting" of my entire life!!
I gave up many things each and EVERY day by coming here; my family, my friends; my American way of life, culture and language; watching football on Sundays, normal driving conditions, various creature comforts, certain health care and cleaning products that you just can't get here, comfort foods (pretzels and micro brews), cooler climate and the changes of season as we have in the Mid-Atlantic States, nature and recreational activities, rock-n-roll and pop music concerts, and so many many other things. The ones aforementioned are just some that come immediately to mind.
Now you are asking me to "fast" even further and even deeper than all I have already given up and left behind while living here in Indonesia?! What an audacity to even suggest such a thing, I thought to myself!
Will I be "fasting" further at certain times and during Holy Week while here in Indonesia ?
Ok, ok.... or as they say in Bahasa, "baik, baik"
